Landzemo Seghanka

Candidate for SGA President

My name is Landzemo Seghanka, and I am currently in my second semester majoring in Mechanical Engineering. I am passionate about innovation, growth, and leadership, and I also strive to challenge myself both academically and personally each day.

Although I have not yet held formal leadership positions or been deeply involved in campus organizations, my time at HCC has helped me better understand the student experience. Most days, I would come to campus for class, go to the gym, study, and then leave. At the time, my focus was primarily on my schoolwork, my job, and my personal development. Over time, I began noticing how other students were connected to the school in ways that went beyond just classes. I began hearing about SGA, ASA, Bible clubs, PTK, P.R.I.D.E, and many other organizations. I saw how these groups brought people together; how students from similar backgrounds could come together, build friendships, and truly feel like they belonged to something bigger than just their schedule. Watching that made me realize how important that sense of community really is.

Being a student who focuses heavily on academics, I understand what it’s like to balance classes, work, and personal responsibilities while trying to stay connected to campus life. I have realized that many students, including myself, can sometimes feel disconnected from the campus community.

While taking ENES 100, Mr. Clement visited our seminar and spoke about innovation and what it takes to be an inventor. During the seminar, he offered a workshop that I decided to attend. In that workshop, he shared three important steps to innovation. The one that stood out to me the most was when he said, “Find a problem – there’s always one.” That message stayed with me. My personal experience at HCC has been positive, but I understand that not every student may feel the same way.

That is why I want to apply what I learned from Mr. Clement’s workshop to student government. If elected, I plan to talk with students across campus and gather their feedback to understand what can be improved or what might be preventing them from fully enjoying their college experience. For example, I will send out surveys every two to three weeks to gather student feedback on areas where improvement is needed. This would help strengthen communication between students and the school’s administration by ensuring their concerns are heard and addressed. I believe the student government should listen first, understand the issue, and then take action. I am ready to take that responsibility and serve the HCC community with integrity, accountability, and purpose.
