The theme of Math Appreciation Week this year is "Mathematics in Every Corner: The Math Behind a Buiding". During our annual speaker event we will explore the intricate role of mathematics in architectural design and how it shapes our built environment. Together, we’ll break down the design process that brings a building to life, using the very space that will hold our event as a case study. From structural integrity to climate control, we'll uncover how mathematics is seamlessly woven into the spaces we inhabit every day.

Our first guest speaker, Jonathan Shin, is a project and operations leader with over a decade of experience managing large-scale capital projects that shape the built environment. With a background in mechanical engineering and project management, he has led multi-million-dollar initiatives across data centers, research facilities, and critical infrastructure. As an Operations Manager at Microsoft, he ensures the seamless integration of design, technology, and efficiency in complex data center operations. Passionate about the intersection of people and places, Jonathan is eager to share how mathematics drives the design and functionality of the spaces we use every day to build communities.

Our next guest speaker, Daniel Kodan, is the Construction Management Project Executive at Gilbane Building Company with 18 years of construction management experience. He has worked on various large scaled projects inncluding the HCC Workforce Development and Trades Center and our Math & Athletics Building (KC Building)! Here Daniel will speak on the importance of math in construction through the entire project lifecycle. Some examples witll include: how math contributes to the overall layout of a building and geometry in architectural design, forces and loading in structural design, and field measurement and verification.
