General Duties/Responsibilities:
Orientation Leaders play an integral role in New Student Orientation programs. Orientation Leaders help new students and their families experience a smooth transition to life at Howard Community College. The dates of employment begin May 2024 and may extend to March of 2025. Orientation Leaders MUST be available for the entire day on the following NSO dates: August 12, 20, 22, January 21, and 23. Orientation Leaders will:
- Support the Assistant Director of Student Life in coordinating and executing New Student Orientation activities both in person and online which will include mass mailings, phone callis, preparing orientation materials/ goody bags, orientation inventory and surveys
- Outreach to both first-time admitted & registered students of HCC inviting them to New Student Orientation
- Lead campus tours for groups of up to 30+ students
- Promote interaction among groups of new students during small group discussions, icebreakers, meals, and activities
- Facilitate new students’ introduction to the college by maintaining an open, helpful attitude and using effective communication techniques
- Facilitate social activities for new students through direct involvement and participation
- Answer questions about both social and academic aspects of campus life
- Participate in a comprehensive training before the start of the program in August and be responsible for all information covered during Orientation Leader training throughout Orientation
- Maintain a positive and welcoming disposition toward incoming students, and families. In addition an Orientation Leader serves as a role model for incoming students and a positive representation of HCC.
- Work closely and cooperate with other Orientation Leaders, LEAD Orientation Leader, supervisors, and other campus administrators to develop, prepare, implement, and evaluate Orientation programs
- Assist in the planning and execution of co-curricular programs throughout the academic year, targeting first year students.
Position Requirements:
The student selected for this position must:
- Be currently enrolled students at HCC in at least 6 credit hours and must have a cumulative and semester GPA of 2.5 or higher
- Pass a background check administered by the Human Resources department
- Be present and on time without exception for all scheduled training sessions and work assignments
- Attend all required meetings and trainings including completing all required trainings online trainings
- Abide by the Student Code of Conduct as specified in the Student Handbook
- Work well with others by respecting all members of the Student Life team
- Abide by all position specific expectations outlined in the Student Life student staff expectations guide
- Have a strong desire to develop leadership skills and to assist incoming students in being prepared to come to campus
- Demonstrate outstanding follow-through and attention to details

Compensation:
If all duties and responsibilities are completed successfully, the student will be paid an hourly rate of $17 not exceeding 15 hours weekly with the exception of NSO dates requiring extended hours.
