The HCC Times Content Strategist is a part-time student leadership position. The Content Strategist must work 10- 15 hours each week in the Office of Student Life from The HCC Times office. This is an hourly position at $17/hour.

The Content Strategist leads The HCC Times staff in organizing, assigning, and assisting with the editing and publishing of articles on The HCC Times website. The Content Strategist is also responsible for the recruitment of journalists and staff. They lead the design and functionality of the website, as well as the planning and execution of all newspaper events, team meetings, and workshops. This position works directly with all students and faculty involved in the publication of The HCC Times.

The Content Strategist will work directly with the following position:

  • The Student Life Associate and The HCC Times faculty advisor
  • The HCC Times Editor by assisting student journalists to decide on article topics, review drafts, and cultivate each journalists' growth as a writer.
  • The HCC Times Administrative Assistant to file work orders, AV requests and create meeting documents, contact newspaper leads and vendors for events, sell advertising space and oversee the maintenance of all representations of The HCC Times on campus (i.e. Bulletin boards, advertisements, and flyers).
  • Student Government Association and Student Program Board leadership to plan collaborative events

Some responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Meets weekly with writers to assign beats or topics.
  • Determines all deadlines and is responsible for enforcing the deadline among staff and writers.
  • Assist the Editor in determining the publishing schedule.
  • Is the first point of contact for student journalists regarding their assignments, deadlines, publicity or anything related to the newspaper prior to finishing an article.
  • Attend weekly or bi-weekly staff meetings
  • Creating and sending The HCC Times weekly newsletter

Requirements:

  • Must be a student at Howard Community College taking at least 6 credit hours
  • Must maintain at least a 2.5 GPA or higher (semester and cumulative)
  • Must be able to work 10-15 hours each week in the Office of Student Life
  • Must have a passion for reading, writing, and editing
  • Must be willing to work on both small and large teams
  • Must be able to deliver tactful, but direct constructive criticism to burgeoning and experienced writers alike
  • Must be able to professionally represent The HCC Times and Howard Community College at all times

Preferred:

  • Experience using the following: Wordpress, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office Suite and Google Drive
  • Experience in a leadership role, such as student government, team captains, supervisor roles or club leader

Stand out Qualities:

  • Working knowledge of HTML and web design or a willingness to learn these skills!
  • Experience working with student-led newspaper, blogging or freelance journalism

Student Leadership

As a student leader, the Content Strategist is expected to work in tandem with other student leadership organizations including Student Programming Board and Student Government Association on events hosted by the Office of Student Life. In addition, student leaders assist the Office of Student Life Staff with various projects, presentations, assignments, and events not limited to New Student Orientation (fall & spring), Welcome Week (fall & spring) and Student Life open houses. Student leaders must additionally take part in fall and spring semester retreats that center on leadership skills and personal/professional growth. The Student Leader Retreat for the Fall 2024 semester will be from August 15-23. Student leaders are expected to demonstrate professional conduct when representing their organization and Howard Community College at events on and off campus.
